Orion books covers

For my D&AD submission I choose the HG Wells covers brief. They had to be non-classical but had to match as a set.  I don't think I'm in with much of a chance but you never know if you don't enter right? I choose four of the five titles to design and I even read two of the four books (Tono-Bungay is probably the best) so I'm not quite Chip Kidd but reading does help to 'see' how the cover should look and I'm a big fan of reading.

Halina Anastigmat

My friend took me to an antique shop yesterday and this is what happened. She wanted it too but insisted I have it though she hated me the whole way home for it. Bought it for £8 which was pretty reasonable according to the internet plus I got a lovely case with it. Now I just hope it works! Have got some film so will test and then post the results. Here's hoping.

Flatterland unconventional book

Again, another long gap! But here it is the second installment, though it was already done when I last posted. Anyway, yesterday I handed in ALL my work, every single thing I have done this year. Suitcases were involved. Pretty sure it weighed more than me.

To cut a long story short, this is the second part of the project that I last posted. A book in an unconventional format that could be read as a book or be seen as a poster that merely folds down. My piece only includes chapter 14 so the whole book would be rather thicker but the same bellyband would still hold it together. Enjoy, hopefully.

Flatterland conventional book

Flatterland is a book about a line called Victoria and a spacehopper – not the best storyline I know but it was a nice typesetting exercise. This is the conventional version, but uses an asymmetric column layout. The diary entries that Victoria writes are tip ins that fold inward so they cannot be immediately read, as diaries are secret and shouldn't be read by others.

ISTD 2010 -- consider me MISTD!

So second time lucky it is. My Alice in Wonderland book got me an ISTD. How exciting! Certainly was not expecting it as I almost didn't enter. But there you go. Luck of the draw.

Anyway, the book is a nonsensical look at 'rules' of wonderland of which there are 100 as it was the 100 brief.

CHOOSE DEATH ... as a living.

This project was for the Roses competition and the brief was to encourage school leavers to join the funeral industry. I haven't convinced myself but I did learn some interesting facts. Did you know that embalming fluid is pink? It's so you look healthy when they pump it into you.

Anyway my submission includes an invitation which would fall out of careers magazines and other publications of that sort to advertise a forthcoming lecture on 'an introduction to funeral directing'. The rest is a poster and a booklet that would accompany the lecture.
